What happened to Easter?...

As a child Easter in Nigeria used to be mini version of Christmas or let me say a rehearsal for Christmas, most children like myself then, looked forward to it. We even day dream and anticipate it.

Just like Christmas, we were bought new clothes, shoes, hair cuts/styles. People travel to their villages especially us from the eastern part of the country, will travel again to finish up the remaining Christmas  chicken. Just like Christmas the cities empties into the villages, the markets are rowdier and opportunistic Nigerian market traders increases the price of goods.

On Good Friday morning, we gather around the TV to see passion of Christ for the umpteenth time, and for all the Easters I remember "NEPA" always cooperated...You never get used to seeing that Passion of Christ !
I cry watching it, even till date. Although I'm masters of tears when watching movies, I could even cry watching  Tom and Jerry... It's okay, you can say it I already know it's annoying.

It is the Easter holidays people! and I won't be surprise that someone just realized that now, because it was like every other weekend in Nigeria. Yesterday most persons ate their usual Sunday meal and carried out their activities like it is just another first day of the week.

Before now, no matter how broke, people still celebrated in some way with families or friends. Churches celebrates and even share refreshments/gifts at least for the children. You could see children coming home from church with big smiles on their faces holding their packs of joy (food/presents)

But these days,  most kids haven't even seen Passion of Christ! I don't think there are children born in the 90's and older who haven't seen that movie. In fact you are seen as weird if you celebrate easter elaborately now.  Hmm... how much times has changed.

Seriously Thel me what happened to Easter?
Have we lost Easter?
Or is it just me noticing this?
After so much thought on this, I came up with a few possible cause of "Easters death"

  • The state of the countries economy.
  • People are busier these days.
  • The modern Nigerian has over grown that type of excitement , we prefer to hang out in restaurants, lounges and bars for every celebrations.
  • Or perhaps I'm an adult now with responsibilities, so I just didn't notice the excitement.

For christains, this should be our most celebrated holiday. After all it is the basis of our faith.

Well I just fear that in the coming years we may also lose Christmas and maybe new year too, slowly and unnoticed just like Easter.

So Thel us, do u think the Easter vibe is lost?
Why do you think its lost if u agree?
Thel us your childhood easter story...
This is Thelmate remember, let's talk about Easter.

  2. I agree with your point 1,2 and 3 but not point 4. Being an adult is not an excuse. Simply put i will say the Church itself has lost the Salvation mission which is the great commission. We are no longer concerned with lost souls but we are now concerned with our pocket souls.

But i believe we the upcoming ones and parents to be can still do something about it.

    All hope is not lost.

  3. I want to share your hope my dear but it feels like the upcoming generations will be worst... Not like that's my prayers though. But look around you, let's just try to keep up in our individual homes and touch the lives we can,but I doubt if easter can ever be the same.

  4. I noticed it too,it's sad that the whole vibe of Easter seems to be dwindling down in our time. I believe the one is in us to revive it.
