We are all guilty.

One morning some days back, I came out of the house only to see a full grown man urinating comfortably just in front of the compound, as if it was some fancy toilet. Speechlessly, I stood there for the next 30 secs watching this divine helper who decided to water the dying flowers (visible to him alone) in front of the compound. Brother became uncomfortable and started urinating forcefully, raising his head at interval to look at me,  I just stood there giving him a very stern look.
When he finally finished the community service, surprisingly even to me because I was really angry, all I could say was "Oga how do you feel about this?" he felt embarrassed and just when he started apologizing I walked out, when the apology will not mop up the urine why sweat it.
Thinking of it most men are guilty of such indiscriminate urination. Sometime ago I asked a man why, and shockingly he blamed the government for not building public toilets at strategic points of the city... Okay I agree with him oh, but why don't women do same? Even though it has been scientifically proven that women urinate more frequently and can hold their urine for a shorter time than the male folks. Well that is a post for another day. And I bet if the government does this, we shall witness a rise of toilet entrepreneurs. Trying to make money from the toilets by every possible way.

Somewhere in Nigeria the government decided to build drainages (gutters)  for a newly constructed road, the people as expected were happy. Months later, the celebrated drainage has been filled with sand and rubbish of all kind. At that point u begin to wonder is it that this people were actually happy because the government has helped them reduce the stress of walking down to an actual dump site to dump their waste?. Few months later their beloved roads now has potholes, then at this point you hear them say things like "government no dey ever do solid road" which may not be a lie though, but just maybe if they haven't converted their drainage into a dumpsite the roads may have lasted a little longer than it did.

A whole area somewhere in Nigeria now don't have light, because some really kind persons decided that lighting up their pockets by vandalising and selling parts from the transformer is more important than lightening up the area.

You keep hearing our roads are dirty,  but sometime ago the government placed baskets at strategic points of the old Port Harcourt township, but guess what?  Those baskets were too clean for Nigerians to put waste inside, so we rather throw it around the baskets and little did we know that the government bought it for some group of persons, who they probably couldn't locate. And one after the other the original owners started taking these baskets off the road.

While the government built railways, some people were building knowledge of how they can vandalize and sell things from the railways. How do I know?, it was reported sometime ago in the news that people were vandalizing and making away with things from the newly built railways.

What happened to the street lights the government managed to put in the highway closest to you? I can Thel you what happened, some persons thought in their hearts " oh Nigerians are very religious why not they let the Lord lighten their darkness and be a light onto their paths than some street lights," so they have collected and sold the batteries of the lights. So that we can practice what we have learnt in our religious gatherings... Good people everywhere!

We just started hearing of the fuel scarcity and just yesterday you bought a cup of rice for N80 and you paid transport fare for N50 but today, the same shop is selling the same rice for N120 and the transportation fare for the same destination is now N100. If you dare to complain, the first thing you hear is "you no know say fuel no dey" for a scarcity that is yet to be confirmed!

A road I know has been bad for years now, I heard that some years back a popular oil firm in the area wanted to construct that road but the wise youths of the community opposed to that, until they are given matching ground fee (don't ask what this means because I am still wondering too)  or settled they won't let them construct a road for THEIR OWN COMMUNITY! Too much wisdom!

A community becomes a host to an oil firm, the chiefs and elders bills these firms a huge amount of money which they share among themselves and not do anything for the community, this is why they can't confront these companies when they breach the agreements and pollute their land. Even when they decide to do something for the community either to ease their conscience or shut the people up, they do substandard and out dated projects.

They are looting and embezzling funds oh yet during the past elections we went for party meetings, campaign and rallies to collect Money, wrappers, caps, T-shirt and food stuffs. If they ask us we will say.. "abeg oh this is the only opportunity I have to collect my own share of the national cake" to all of us who collected national cake, I hope you are still eating it?

The government is not working everytime, but what do you expect with the way we worship and adore them coming out to the streets singing and dancing Hossana in the highest wearing Ankara and clothes bearing their faces and party logos. When a state governor is supposed to concern himself/herself with better projects for the state is coming to cut ribbon around a 4 meter Well in the center of the city this 21 century! We settle for less they give us less, by the way they are no philanthropist it is the states money! Maybe we forget..

Nigerians are making exploits and living honest lives abroad but you will still agree that mostly we are deported, prosecuted, arrested and executed for crimes (recently it was Dubai)
We claim that we are not known for exporting anything but, news flash! Most countries like South Africa, Dubai, Canada, India and the most painful Ghana has said we have been successfully importing corruption and crime into their countries for years.

Well in a country where the end justifies the means, this is what you get!
Just make money, no matter how.
Just leave school with a good result no matter how.
And the whole community will celebrate you even being aware that it is not genuine.
Let me stop here before I annoy myself any further.
But see ehhh, you see this Nigeria condition WE ARE ALL GUILTY! It has nothing to do with the government but the kind of training the modern Nigerian parents give their children, because even under a "better government " in other countries we still dey COMMIT!
Thel me are you guilty?
Thel me your guilty story?
Thel me what you think.
This is Thelmate Just talk!

  1. Hmmm.... Real food for thought.
I think the issues of indiscriminate urination, waste dumping and vandalism.. Is as a result of the people's mindset. That popular uninformed Nigerian mindset. That's the reason Nigerians still commits such crimes even when they find themselves in another country.
You'll agree with me that, if for example, a white man finds himself in Nigeria, he can't partake in such ungodly acts, because they have a peculiar mindset altogether.. So I think this has to do with the wrong mindset we carry, though I stand to be corrected.
Now, based on my opinion, the remedy is to work on the populace's mindset that is in the state of quagmire already. If we can do away with our popular mindset and carry a peculiar one. Then things will begin to take a new shape.

  4. You wouldn't blame parents totally because i know parents who painstakingly put in their best to make sure that their Children are different from what we see in the society but the Children in their own way have chosen the path they really want to follow.

Talking about our government, they don't just have the blame like you rightly pointed out. If we really want a great government then we the masses have to govern ourselves well and the government believe you me will have no choice than to follow in our steps.

Like we hear on the media most times. "The change we desire actually begins with us"

Thelmate that was a terrific write up👍
